Personally, I think that The Hills has gone downhill this season, way downhill. I long for the episodes where Heidi’s face did not look like it was melting and when L.C. did more than just whine and act like a character from Mean Girls. The show has certainly jumped the shark and my guess is that it will fade into the LA night fairly soon. However, Whitney Port, the series’ fashion maven is getting her own spin-off set in NYC aptly titled, The City. From the looks of the preview below it seems like we will be seeing more of the same—bitchy bosses, multiple fashion changes, little braids in the hair, and mangy male characters. In comparison to Lauren Conrad’s faux charm, Port’s earnest demeanor just may make this one more watchable.

Watch It: The Hills Premiere
Posted Monday, August 18th, 2008 in Pop Culture
I have a very tough decision to make: watch the premiere of The Hills tonight or watch my regular Monday night vice, Intervention—after last weeks “huffing” episode I am eager to see how they can top the drama. Thankfully DVR will rectify this issue—plus, I am sure that the faux drams on The Hills will be tantamount. Speaking of needing an Intervention, Heidi released her new song, “Overdosin’,” in my opinion, the best of all of her tracks. Heavy on the vocoder and breathy delivery, it’s as good as anything you would hear in say, a shampoo commercial. Lauren Conrad could also use a lesson in (outfit) OD-ing. Recently she has been trotting all over town wearing Sunday’s best on say, a Wednesday. For instance, check out this ensemble. While most people walk their dogs wearing everyday clothes, LC dons a fancy bag, ruffled mini, major pumps, and huge shades. Not the most practical for the dog park, but obviously, paparazzi perfect. We know where her priorities are. Poor dog.

Heidi & Spencer: The $3 Million Dollar Couple
Posted Monday, June 9th, 2008 in Pop Culture
Who knew you could make so much dough by doing nothing. Literally, nothing. “Speidi” as they are
referred to by fans and foes alike, the villainous couple from The Hills, apparently earned $3 million dollars in the past 2 years. Not for curing an infectious disease, not for their charitable contributions, not for their award-winning talent…in the words of Amy Winehouse, “no, no, no.” They got paid simply for being their blonde, preening, veneered smiling selves (see, they’re even chuckling about it in this photo). From their “candid” shots posing for the paparazzi, to their omni-presence at clubs and sporting events, to their “business” deals, the gruesome twosome are laughing all the way to the bank. The couple you love to hate does indeed move magazines and sell tight dresses and short-shorts. Their popularity can even be felt on eBay. For example, when you search for Heidi Montag you get a list of items that includes glamour shots, various magazine covers, items from her clothing line “Heidiwood”, and other random swag. With season 4 of The Hills premiering in August we think that this couple will be sticking around and milking it for a while longer. Get used to more “Baywatch” style beach romps, dates at Disneyland, and red carpet kissing. I’m just mad I didn’t think of this scheme first. Harumph.

Pop Goes the Weekend
Posted Monday, May 5th, 2008 in Pop Culture
Monday, Monday… time to re-cap the weekend that’s just passed us by. Although the weekend started without couch jumping, it certainly began with a bang. Friday was Oprah’s
exclusive interview with Tom Cruise in Telluride to set the record straight on the star’s in-the-spotlight life. On the silver screen, Iron Man was tops at the box office (and on eBay with close to 9,000 related items for sale!) selling an estimated $100.8 million dollars in tickets. Holy shazam! In sports, the Kentucky Derby brought out a mish-mash of stars decked-out in seersucker and big-brimmed hats. High brow attendees included Chelsea Clinton and the design duo of Badgley Mischka. Other guests that caused Mint Juleps to stir were Hills villains Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt, as well as Hugh Hefner and his gaggle of “Girls Next Door”. Moreover, seeing as it is Cinco de Mayo I suspect that the festive vibe will continue, especially since tonight is the most glam event of the year, the appropriately (and very timely) superhero themed, Costume Institute Gala at the Met. Party on!

The Hills Premiere: Hallelujah!
Posted Monday, March 31st, 2008 in Pop Culture
My TV time is limited these days. And while I have been tuning in to “The Real Housewives of New York” and “Top Chef Chicago” (they are amongst my favorites), I cannot tell you how thrilled I am that “The Hills” is back! Even though they have not been far from the public eye, oh how I have missed Lauren and her girl gang of 3.
Here’s what Team Hills has been up to:
L.C. officially launched her fashion line at LA Fashion Week, Audrina has been busy wearing tunics and cropped leather jackets at LA’s hottest clubs, Whitney announced she is getting into the fashion game too, and Heidi, well, she’s been mugging for the paparazzi with her Claymation-created svengali of a boyfriend, Spencer Pratt. These girls get a serious amount of ink and I have all of the back issues of the tabs to prove it.
If you don’t “know” what I am talking about or what the show’s premise is (duh, it’s like, about LA!), read Gawker’s “Non-Watchers Guide to the Hills”. It offers a perfectly concise (and smartly cynical) synopsis of the cult program. Or, you can just get the DVDs and have a Hills marathon…blonde hair and a bad attitude are not required.
