Tinkerbells for Tots

Posted Wednesday, September 10th, 2008 in Gadgets & Toys

Wow, what an exciting time to be a little girl! There have been many virtual Internet worlds created for kids in the last few years. Until now though, none have come up with a way to blend online and offline play while incorporating classic girly favorites.

Now, Disney created the virtual world of Pixie Hollow (pixiehollow.com) for young girls to design their own personal fairy – getting to choose everything from fashion to personality to likes and dislikes. The site is similar to ones where you can create and take care of a pet, but with an extra sprinkle of pixie dust!

Also check out the Clickables Fairy Collection by Techno Source. They have created an entire line of fairy jewelry (think charms and friendship bracelets) ranging between $5.99 and $29.99. Begin with a starter set, complete with a magical jewelry box, a charm necklace, and three Clickables charms. Plus, your little ones can create online groups (similar to MySpace or Facebook) with the Clickable charms. You can “add” someone to your friend list online by touching the charms together when you see each other in person. Meaning only people you’re in direct contact with can join your online circle of friends!

For you gamers, they also have a handheld electronic LCD with five video games where you can play as one of your favorite fairies from the movies and earn points to redeem in fairy land on pixiehollow.com. My fairy name is Scarlet Nightshimmer. Oh, to be young again!

What Rocks? Camp Rock!

Posted Friday, June 13th, 2008 in Pop Culture

With all of the hype surrounding Camp Rock, I predict that High School Musical may graduate to persona non grata status. The buzz surrounding this new Disney epic is deafening. It has not even premiered and already, there are over 200 Camp Rock-related items on eBay. Just how massive is this thing gonna be? Well, if the premiere in NYC was any indication, it’s going to be huge. The streets were packed with screaming, devoted fans. Not only does the film star the uber-popular Jonas Brothers, it also features the new tween queen, Demi Lovato. It’s like the Beatles all over again—throngs of girls were waiting outside of the Jonas Brothers’ hotel in an attempt to claw at their favorite bro. On a personal note, I think that Camp Rock is going to rule. I love camp and I love dancing in unison so it seems as though this movie was made for me…and all of the other 12-year old girls (at heart!) across the nation.

Cruisin’ with the Kids

Posted Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008 in Gadgets & Toys

Keeping Jack happy and safe when we’re on the road is my top priority. This weekend, we’re headed out of town so I wanted to share some of the goodies we’re taking with us. The Trunki is PERFECT for kids who want to help out with the luggage, but will never end up wanting to walk the whole time. This rolling bag is really easy for kids to pull around. Then, once they start asking to be picked up, they can sit on this while you pull them along.

Driving in the car? You have to check out BackSeat TV from the folks at Sirius. You can listen to your favorite satellite radio shows in the front seat, while in the back your kids can navigate through Nick, the Disney channel, and Cartoon network! The TV is not included, so make sure you score one on eBay before getting this product.

Heading to the beach or swimming pool? The Autotether allows you to keep track of your kids once they hit the water. It’s a two-unit deal with one end attaching to your kid’s wrist or bathing suit and the other unit attaching to Mom or places in her bag. If one of the kid’s units enters water or if the child moves more than 100 feet away from you, the main unit will sound!

The MixMax is a great little gadget for any age. This is Disney’s tiny video screen that fits in your pocket and plays movies that are pre-recorded onto SD cards for super-easy access. You can use your car charger or cell phone USB charger to keep the entertainment going, although the battery power on these is great at around four hours. Bon Voyage!
