Twitter vs. Facebook

Posted Wednesday, March 11th, 2009 in Uncategorized

People love to pit the social media titans against one another: who will rise as the victor? Tough to say, but there is some interesting competition amongst the 21st century giants on eBay. Currently, there are 123, Facebook-related items on eBay vs. 21, Twitter-clip_image002related items. If Twitter keeps taking the social media world my guess is that number will skyrocket—more books, more spoof  tees, more tzotchkes. As far as popularity, I do know people are quickly becoming Facebook and Twitter addicts—myself included. I was never a Friendster or MySpacer and held out on creating a Facebook profile forever. Now, I am a slave to the site, posting blog entries, photos, and thinking of quippy status updates. Our Twitter-feed forces me to be even more punchy with my dialogue. I follow quite a few pop culture icons including: Britney Spears, Barack Obama, Martha Stewart, Ashton Kutcher, John Mayer, and Demi Moore. They would never be my Facebook friends so seeing their random musings on Twitter is amusing. However, some of them need to enroll in a seminar on how to craft class updates (quit using so many exclamation points!). Make sure to follow the Insider Blog on Twitter so you can hear our pop culture musings all day long.

eBay and Inauguration Day

Posted Tuesday, January 20th, 2009 in Pop Culture

Happy inauguration day! eBay has become the destination of choice for consumers eagerly anticipating this historic day: in the past ninety days alone, over 130,000 “Obama”-Atmosphererelated items have sold and listings of “Barack Obama Inauguration”-related items have increased 413 percent with new items being added to the site on a daily basis. Barack Obama’s popularity has turned politics into pop culture and his supporters are feeding their appetite for any and everything related to the President. Currently there are over 28,000 “Obama” related listings on eBay…and my guess is that after today’s festivities, many memorabilia items will trickle onto the site. One of my favorite items is the Obama periscope (obviously to help view today’s parade). Another stellar find is this Official Barack Obama Inauguration invite—it’s not an actual invitation, but rather a historical keepsake. Save your newspapers from today, you may be able to sell them for a pretty penny—and remember to bid on a piece of history!

Inauguration Fever

Posted Wednesday, January 14th, 2009 in Pop Culture

aag-007618Everyone has inauguration fever these days. There will be more events, more memorabilia, and more anticipation than ever. It’s like the Backstreet Boys in their heyday. All joking aside, between the guessing of what Michelle and the girls will wear to the oath of office, people are all a-twitter. One of the most unique events is the Kids Inaugural: We are the Future Event. Michelle Obama and Jill Biden will serve as hosts and a slew of pop culture phenoms will take the stage to participate including Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers. Another concert that The Jonas Brothersis star-studded is the Neighborhood Inaugural Ball which will air on ABC after Obama is sworn in—Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys and Jay-Z will all perform. To top it off, even more celebs are coming forward to record a secret message for the President Elect. Snap! Snagging an invite to the White House is going to be way harder than getting into the Vanity Fair Oscar bash.

Watch This: “Obama’s Loss Traced To Karen Bard”

Posted Thursday, October 30th, 2008 in Pop Culture

I literally had chills go down my spine when I saw the headline above. I mean, I know I do a lot of broadcast appearances about the election but I did not think I was the topic of a headline news brief. Literally, when I pressed play my heart started racing and I thought I may need to go to the ER. Watch the video below for and experience the hilarity. And speaking of the election, on eBay right now, VP candidate Sarah Palin is pulling ahead in the Cabbage Patch Kids doll auction. Right now the SP doll is going for $1,025 in comparison to Barack Obama’s $510. But like the race itself, you never know how it will end- we’ll have to wait until the 4th!

Video to Watch: McCain Goes All Tyra…Work It!

Posted Thursday, October 16th, 2008 in Pop Culture

If you watched the debate last night you probably noticed all of John McCain’s facial contortions. That man sure can blink—he would get housed in a staring contest. Besides the blinking he also scrunched, stretched, and as Tyra likes to call it “smile with the eyes.” She is the master and should have been utilized in McCain’s pre-debate media training. Can you imagine Tyra and Miss J. schooling John McCain on his body language? That would be a perfect SNL skit. Lorne Michaels, that one was for free.

Auction to Watch: Paris Hilton Election Video Lounge Chair

Posted Wednesday, October 8th, 2008 in Pop Culture

With the 2nd debate behind us and the election in front of us, we are all feeling politically pooped. But it’s not all doom and gloom and financial meltdowns. We can still laugh heartily at Tina Fey’s spot on Palin impersonation as well as John Stewart and Steven Colbert’s acerbic commentary. Remember a few months back when things were heating up and the spoofs were beginning to surface? Well then you may remember this little viral video of Paris Hilton that was on Funny or Die. Thanks to eBay you can own the chair that Paris was lounging in in the video. She signed the chair “Paris Hilton, Vote ‘08 xoxo.” I can’t believe that I am about to write this but, Paris is right. Get out and vote!

What’s on Tonight: “This Crazy Election”

Posted Friday, September 26th, 2008 in Pop Culture

They tell you to never talk about politics with friends, that it will only cause a brouhaha. Well my friends, like Mike Myers on Coffee Talk, we need to “discuss.” This week has been total and complete mayhem. Between the financial collapse, John McCain acting a fool, and Sarah Palin still milking that “Russia is my neighbor” thing in her Katie Couric interview, my head is about to come unscrewed. Just look at the spoof cover of Entertainment Weekly from this week, proof positive that the election has even invaded pop culture publications (not to mention those covers of Obama on Us Weekly and the McCains on People). Tonight’s debate (cross your fingers) is poised to give us an eye and earful. My prediction is that it will be so action packed that the networks may even consider it for the new fall Friday night lineup. Move over America’s Toughest Jobs

Democratic National Convention: Tonight’s Obama’s Night

Posted Thursday, August 28th, 2008 in Pop Culture

I would be humming the Rod Stewart classic, “Tonight’s the Night” if it did not have such tawdry connotations. However, tonight is the night…history will be made when Barack Obama accepts the nomination for President of the United States of America. It will be a moment charged with electricity and excitement and Bill Clinton’s speech last night set the stage for a new generation of leadership. Excitement is at a fever pitch. Even though many cannot make it to the mile high city, you can own a piece of the DNC by purchasing memorabilia online. So far, this is my favorite item.
