Democratic National Convention: Tonight’s Obama’s Night

Posted Thursday, August 28th, 2008 in Pop Culture

I would be humming the Rod Stewart classic, “Tonight’s the Night” if it did not have such tawdry connotations. However, tonight is the night…history will be made when Barack Obama accepts the nomination for President of the United States of America. It will be a moment charged with electricity and excitement and Bill Clinton’s speech last night set the stage for a new generation of leadership. Excitement is at a fever pitch. Even though many cannot make it to the mile high city, you can own a piece of the DNC by purchasing memorabilia online. So far, this is my favorite item.

What’s on eBay Today?

Posted Wednesday, August 27th, 2008 in Pop Culture

Britney will not be laughed at this time around – the singer will not perform at the upcoming MTV’s Video Music Awards. Perhaps, she’s ready for her comeback. A repeat of last year’s performance would be bad news.

A horde of Elvis Presley impersonators gathered to try and set the world record for number of people dressed like “the King” in one place. Sadly, the group’s goal could not be achieved, as some of the contestants’ costumes were incomplete. Next time around, participants should look into wearing one of these.

I Can’t Wait For: Spain…on the Road Again

Posted Tuesday, August 26th, 2008 in Pop Culture

If you are obsessed with cooking, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Mario Batali like I am then you will love the upcoming PBS series, Spain…on the Road Again, premiering in September. The series got some buzz last year when it was announced that Paltrow and the portly Croc-wearing Batali would cavort all around Spain talking about cuisine and cooking (hopefully in Paltrow’s exaggerated Spanish accent). There was little- to-no info about the production and I kinda forgot about it until I found clip online today chronicling the pair’s adventures. The unlikely couple—the macrobiotic mommy and the mangia man take NY Times foodie, Mark Bittman and Spanish hottie, Claudia Bassols in the Mercedes convertible with them too. From the looks of the preview I think this will be my new favorite show…move over 90210.

Stay Tuned: 90210 is Coming

Posted Friday, August 22nd, 2008 in Pop Culture

The new 90210 is less than 12 days away and I have my DVR and bowl of popcorn at the ready. I loved 90210 so much as a kid that when I would go away to summer camp I would have my mom record all of the episodes I missed and upon my return, hunker down with my homies and have a mega-marathon. The new Bev is being hyped hard, especially because Bren is coming back. It’s just too good. Kelly and Brenda together again? Will they wear chokers and sunflower printed off the shoulder dresses? Will they pout over Dylan? Oh, the story line cup runneth over! The 2-hour series premiere is on September 2nd.

What’s Hot Today

What are we watching on eBay?

Looks like there is some danger at the Jackson Family Reunion.

Waking up and putting this robe on will make you want to sing “Good Day Sunshine.”

It’s not unusual to be loved by anyone… and it’s not unusual for Tom Jones to perform in Vegas (in tight pants, no less)– but it is unusual to see his billiard table up for grabs on eBay!

Cool Site: Yearbook Yourself

Posted Wednesday, August 20th, 2008 in Pop Culture

If you are like me you have saved all of your old high school yearbooks so you can revisit your outrageous outfits, your former friends, and most importantly, your unbelievable thinness. Yearbooks are like the ultimate pop culture treasure trove, they capture a moment in time so efficiently—from the trends to the high tresses. However, we now have Facebook to quell our “I wonder where they are?” curiosity. FB chronicles what your “friends” from HS look like at age 30+— (less hair, longer skirts). Keep in mind, both you and these seemingly professional looking folks looked way different a decade back. So if you are struggling to recall what you looked like in ‘92, I recommend visiting Yearbook Yourself so that you can take a trip down memory lane. It’s simple and hysterical: upload a photo of yourself and the tool will generate pics of you with different hairdos from from various eras (witness the results above). But if you want the real deal, you can shop the mega huge yearbook selection on eBay.

Rock Revival: Daryl Hall

Posted Tuesday, August 19th, 2008 in Pop Culture

As cheesy as their hairdos may have been in the 80s, you cannot deny the sweet sounds of Hall and Oates. Whenever a H&O song comes on the radio or I am rocking the karaoke mic, I sing along. Their catalog of tunes is solid: “Rich Girl”, “Kiss on My List”, “Private Eyes”, “Maneater”, “Family Man”, “Say It Isn’t So”, “Out of Touch:”…I could go on and on. Their blue-eyed soul has inspired a generation of modern day crooners. Skeptical? Hall made an appearance this year at the hipster music mecca, South by Southwest. If you are still questioning my musical taste then I suggest you check out Daryl Hall’s website, Live From Daryl’s House to see the litany of stars that he has hosted. K.T. Tunstall, Travis from Gym Class Heroes, and most recently, electrofunk duo Chromeo have all sat in for sessions. So awesome…”say it IS so”!

Watch It: The Hills Premiere

Posted Monday, August 18th, 2008 in Pop Culture

I have a very tough decision to make: watch the premiere of The Hills tonight or watch my regular Monday night vice, Intervention—after last weeks “huffing” episode I am eager to see how they can top the drama. Thankfully DVR will rectify this issue—plus, I am sure that the faux drams on The Hills will be tantamount. Speaking of needing an Intervention, Heidi released her new song, “Overdosin’,” in my opinion, the best of all of her tracks. Heavy on the vocoder and breathy delivery, it’s as good as anything you would hear in say, a shampoo commercial. Lauren Conrad could also use a lesson in (outfit) OD-ing. Recently she has been trotting all over town wearing Sunday’s best on say, a Wednesday. For instance, check out this ensemble. While most people walk their dogs wearing everyday clothes, LC dons a fancy bag, ruffled mini, major pumps, and huge shades. Not the most practical for the dog park, but obviously, paparazzi perfect. We know where her priorities are. Poor dog.

Phelps Fever…Catch It!

Posted Friday, August 15th, 2008 in Pop Culture

I have a rash of Olympic fever and no meds can cure my disease! I am reading and watching obsessively. I have even sacrificed much needed sleep to watch late night gymnastics. I think that could be why I keep having dreams about being able to do backflips. Anywho, the swim cube is where it’s at; world records are being smashed, LZR suits are being rocked, and Michael Phelps is kicking a$$ and taking names. Phelps has won 6 Golds in Beijing and has won 11 career gold medals – more than any Olympic athlete in any sport. He’s popular in the pool and he’s way popular on eBay.

According to the eBay Marketplace data over the past month:
▪ 408 Michael Phelps listings on eBay
▪ The average price of Michael Phelps items: $9.78
▪ Highest priced Michael Phelps item: $250.00 Michael Phelps USA Olympics signed 8×10 photo
▪ 240% increase in “Michael Phelps” listings on the site over the past 30 days
▪ 70% increase in sales of “Michael Phelps” items on the site in the past 30 days

Auction to Watch: GLAAD’s Charity Auction of Style & Taste

Posted Thursday, August 14th, 2008 in Pop Culture

If you have “big day” dreams then you must check out this auction. Couples with love on the brain (and perhaps pennies in the pocket!) can bid on the ultimate San Francisco wedding with GLAAD’s “I Do” Charity Auction to benefit marriage equality. The wedding package is valued at close to $43,000 and is ultra-fabulous (think exclusive venue, travel vouchers, pampering, luxe confections, a bomb hotel suite) —you must read through all of the details to see for yourself…it is simply smashing.

But if you are not on the market, you can still contribute to this important cause. You can win a foodie experience in Napa with Top Cheftestant, Jen Biesty (one of my faves from last season). Seriously, it is an utterly unreal experience that will have you salivating when you read about it. Watch the video below for more details.

And if you are the lucky winner, I expect an invitation to either your wedding or dinner party. Pretty please?
