What started as a New York society and fashion insider event has now become a red carpet spectacle. The Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute gala has some calling it the city’s party of the year.
They’re not far wrong. What with the all that power – fashion, entertainment, sports, money, art, politics and media – in one room.
Perhaps attracted to this year’s “Superheroes” theme, there were more superstars than usual. Eva Longoria, Hilary Duff, Julia Roberts, George Clooney, Eli Manning, Diane Von Furstenberg, Venus Williams, Ashley Olsen, Giorgio Armani. No doubt, Armani, one of the evening’s co-chairs, had something to do with the megawatt turn out (Most of the male stars wore Armani as did Julia Roberts). He set the fashion standard for courting stars, and the result; the most talked-about couples (not counting Bill and Hill) came out to play.
The oddest pairing had to be Gisele Bundchen and Tom Brady. I still don’t get it. See his comment to the New York Times at the gala. Maybe it’s because they’re both tall. Anyway, Gisele looked fabulous and super sexy in a champagne Versace with glittery clutch and boyfriend in hand.
Also showing up with her personal “Superhero”; Kimora Lee with actor, Djimon Hounsou. They seem to be working out well. Kimora personified the evening’s crosscurrent of fashion and art in a beautiful hand-painted Kevan Hall strapless dress. On trend.
Music mega couple, Janet Jackson and Jermaine Dupri stayed close. When are they going to get married?!?!…I know its coming soon! Well if there was any foreshadowing of wedding bells, Janet’s white Versace gown did it.
Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez, in a so-so teal-shaded Alberta Ferretti, took a break from the twins. David and Victoria Beckham flew in from L.A. How big was the carbon footprint of this event anyway? Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise flew in too and I’m sure I didn’t see them on the American Airlines red eye.
And just in time for Mother’s Day, there were some sweet mum/daughter couples like Donatella Versace and her daughter Allegra Beck, and Anna Wintour and her daughter Bee Shaffer. If you’re in New York, this year’s exhibit “Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy” runs until September 1st.
